Dear 6th year medical students,
SEMMELWEIS UNIVERSITY - Diplom Work 2011-2012
In all kinds of programs the student is required to prepare a diploma work for the diploma. The aim of the diploma work is to enable the student by the individual research of the scientific field to improve his or her skills in seeing the significant items, the method of researching literature and express opinions compactly and accurately.
1. The preparation of the diploma work is guided by a supervisor and sometimes a consultant. A supervisor may be an instructor or researcher of the faculty or, if the dean allows, an external expert. A consultant is a university researcher instructor or an external expert who helps the student's work. If an external supervisor is applied, an internal consultant is required. When elaborating the topic, basic and up-to-date works related to the topic need to be used.
2. The schedule of announcing and approving diploma work topics:
The head of the organizational unit prepares a list of topics and indicates the names of the consultants. The list of topics is made public at least four semesters earlier than the last year of the program by the end of the first exam period of each school year on the notice board of the faculty and on the Internet.
3. Rules of registering for topics:
The student may select any announced topic. The topic selection may be different from these if the head of the education organizational unit agrees. The student must submit the topic at least a year before concluding the studies at the head of the education organizational unit.
If approved, the head will record the topic and provide a consultant. The selected topic discusses a current issue of the given scientific field.
4. The formal requirements of the diploma work:
The length of the diploma work must be no less than 50,000 characters and no longer than 100,000 (excluding spaces). Font type: Times New Roman, font size: twelve. Tables and references are included in the length, but figures, footnotes and the literature list are not. The diploma work must be submitted in a stitched or bound format in 2 copies. The front must indicate the title, the name, class and group of the student, the time of submitting the diploma work and the name/workplace of the consultant. The student may write the diploma work in a foreign language if the head of department approves.
5. The deadline for submitting:
The student must consult with the consultant at least three times:
first: by no later than 1 October in the final year 2012 - The consultant informs the student on the requirements and topic choices,
second: by no later than 15 November in the final year 2012 - The student reports on the work completed up until that point,

CLASS OF 2011
"The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet" - Aristotle
It is my true pleasure to introduce the Yearbook of the Class of Twenty-Eleven of the English Language Program at Semmelweis University, whose members came from all over the world, from forty five countries of five continents, and formed a real international student community. It has been a rewarding experience for me to guide and oversee the early struggles, then the constant improvement and finally the glorious finish of the graduates of 2011. The overall grade average for the Class of 2011 is close to 4, which is next to best and can be considered as a remarkable achievement, considering the academic rigors at Semmelweis University
I believe that the past six years have been memorable to both Graduates and University. It takes two to create success: a caring school of high academic standards and a diligent and dedicated student body with high ambitions. Besides studying hard and obtaining the necessary foundation for their future profession, students were active in shaping their own life. It was during the last six years that the International Student Association of Semmelwis, ISAS, was formed, which, with its own website, became a real student forum. A group of artistically inclined students edited the magazine JOINT, in which they expressed their feelings about life at Semmelweis and the vagaries of living in Budapest, proving their creativity. Sport, being a cohesive force, also contributed to forging personal bonds, and students of 2011 were actively participating in various sport events.
For the graduates of 2011 there is a lot to remember, since six years is a significant part of life of a twenty-some years old. But the last six years was also an important period in the life of Semmelweis University, close to 250 years old. Despite global financial difficulties an unprecedented development has been taking place in recent years. Just to mention a few, the central building was restored to its old time beauty, a new Basic Science Center was built, that besides serving teaching and science, soon became popular among students and now functions as a sort of mini campus, a new Dentistry Center opened its doors for students and patients, alike, and a Cardiovascular Center was formed and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, such as 3D cardiac MR. Development will not stop here, as next year the building of new clinical block will start in the outer clinical garden along the Üllői street axis.
Two years ago the first Alumni Meeting was organized to celebrate the 20th birthday of the English Language Program at Semmelweis University, which event proved to be a great success. I do hope that the high spirit of Class 2011 will be maintained and we can welcome this year's graduates at the next Semmelweis Alumni Meeting. It may sound ironic, but it is true, that we spend our school days yearning to graduate and our remaining days waxing nostalgic about our school days. Still, remember, that like any relationship, if you are going to keep it at a distance, you will need to work at it. So, I wish you a fruitful long lasting relation with your Alma Mater.
Mark Kollai, MD, PhD
Professor of Physiology Director of the Foreign Students' Secretariat

It is advice to follow one of the program schedules to avoid difficulties with exam dates and registration in the Neptun.
Rotations can be done only at University Departments or Teaching Hospitals.

The following rotation must be done at Semmelweis University: Pediatrics- 2 weeks
Family medicine cannot be done at the end of the calendar year at Semmelweis University.

Students can pay the tuition fees in 2 parts. The first amount must be paid until the end of July,
the second amount until the end of December.
Students completing all the rotations outside Hungary (except 2 weeks of Pediatrics) can apply for a 20% tuition fee reduction after having presented all acceptance letters. The reduction will be deducted from the 2nd part of your tuition fee.
Final exams are either in the last week of the rotations or during the week after.

The United States International Students' Office contacted the Hungarian Accreditation Committee in relation to the continuous accreditation and review of foreign clinical practice positions. The Committee consulted the leaders of the University and, taking into consideration the opinion of the United States authorities, it will take into account the following criteria in selecting the foreign clinical practice positions and accepting the practice period spent abroad:
1. In the Member States of the European Union (and in Switzerland and Norway), clinical practice is accepted and recognised if it is earned at state-accredited university clinics or teaching hospitals. The legal ground for this is the mutual recognition of diplomas issued by accredited institutions.
2. Practice outside the European Union is only admissible at institutions where Semmelweis University has a bilateral study contract or if these places are being accredited by Semmelweis University.
At the present time, the following non-EU teaching institutions have a study contract in place with Semmelweis University:
1. University of California, Davis School Medicine, One Shields Avenue, Davis, California 95616, USA.
2. State University of New York, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, 501 Capen Hall, Buffalo, NY 14260-1600, USA.
3. Saitama Medical School, Moroyama, Iruma-gun, Saitama 350-0495, Japan .
In the future, internships spent elsewhere will be considered by the University as additional opportunities of gaining experience, but the student must also spend mandatory internships in the given periods in an appropriate Hungarian or EU-based clinical institution.
If a student wishes to spend their internship abroad, it is the student's responsibility to obtain a valid accreditation certificate accepted at the given EU teaching institution and must submit it with the Dean's approval.
Please note that the above rules are in force, although it still does not affect the summer 2011 internships and the 6th year rotations between July 2011 and May, 2012.
Regards,
Team ISAS 2011

Originally being a Zoroastrian festival, and the holiest of them all, Nowruz is believed to have been invented by Zoroaster himself, Since the Achaemenid era the official year has begun with the New Day when the Sun leaves the zodiac of Pisces and enters the zodiac sign of Aries, signifying the Spring Equinox.
Each year we have celeberations in this day , this year we have a unique event which is a concert of ARASH with his extraordinary band.
We hope you can join us in celebrating this wonderful event.

Students of Foreign Language Programs at Semmelweis University,
In recent years, Semmelweis University has built a valuable student community by maintaining high academic standards and placing much emphasis on the ethical integrity of our education. The overwhelming majority of our students appreciate our efforts. Unfortunately, a small minority does not want to accept our ethical guidelines, and tries to take undue advantage at exams by using unacceptable techniques.
We therefore do implement the following sanctions:
Students who are found at exams possessing forbidden items, including electrical devices, such as mobile phones, ipods, etc. will automatically and immediately be discharged with disgrace from Semmelweis University. By implementing this rule, we wish to preserve the academic and material value of the Semmelweis Diploma.
Starting from the next academic year, our students will be obliged to sign a declaration in which they state to abide by this rule.
Prof. Dr. Mark Kollai
director Foreign Students' Secretariat

Dear Students,
Team ISAS would like to inform you that you have the possibility to spend one month on a professional exchange in a hospital abroad in the organization of HuMSIRC (Hungarian Medical Students Association) the member of IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students Associations) All the students attending 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th year are allowed to apply.
The following places are available: Brasil 4 places Mexico 2 places Peru 1 place Libanon 1 place Italy in may 1 place Tunisia
Important things to know: - You get accomodation and at least one meal a day during the clerkship. - You need to pay 35000 Ft to HuMSIRC. From this amount we host an exchange student in Budapest. - You need to pay for the travel costs and the insurance. - Semmelweis University doesn't accept the obligatory practice fulfilled outside the European Union, Switzerland and Norway, consideres it only a professional experience. So if you go on an obligatory practice, you will have to make it in a member state of the EU again.
((I am sure that you heard about the new accreditation rules of Semmelweis University. An important thing to those, who do their practice in the EU: you need to send to the hosting university or hospital an accreditation document. It can be found on the university webpage in English. They fill it for you and send back. Otherwise the practice won't be accepted.))
The exchange conditions, the cities to choose, the departments to choose and the necessary documents of all the countries mentionned above can be found at www.ifmsa.net/public professional exchange, exchange conditions.

VOLUNTEER BASED CLASSES
Dear Students!
Hereby we inform you, about the conditions of picking up volunteer based classes. You have to sign up via internet by sending us an e-mail about what class and which of the available dates you could attend. Address :
For detailed information about the volunteer based classes please go to Information on changes in the Physical Education Curriculum for Students chapter.
If you cannot sign up for volunteer based classes, (in case of fullfillness) then students have to attend regular physical education classes (biweekly, and according to the timetable). If you get accepted into a volunteer based class we will send you a confirmation e-mail.
Information on changes in the Physical Education Curriculum for students in Semmelweis University 's General Dentistry, Medicine, and Pharmacy Faculties
In September 2003 physical education started since physical education has become a part of the mandatory curriculum on April 21st 2003. Each student is required to acquire four signatures in the first six semesters. An enrolled student must take part in physical education classes once every two weeks for a double period (2 X 45). A student is only allowed to be absent once per semester. All other absences must be made up. A student is only allowed to participate in one mandatory PE class per week being their normal PE class or a scheduled make up class.
A mandatory PE class will be conducted according to a syllabus which has designed to exercise different muscle groups. There will be a special emphasis on form and exercise technique. Professional dentist and pharmacists are prone to vertebral problems so this is why we have begun to give great attention to back exercises.
There is also a great deal of emphasis on game sports too. In the second half of the class students will be allowed to choose their favorite game including Handball, Basketball, Volleyball, Football, Tennis, Floor ball, Ping Pong, Badminton, Baseball, and Rugby.
Students during class will learn the basis of these sports. Basic training methods will also be taught. At the end of the 4th semester students should be able to warm up by themselves for any type of physical exercise and be able to give advice to patients about life style based on their own experiences in their Physical Education classes.
In the past five years we have experienced that it is hard for students to attend the mandatory physical education classes. The goal of the Physical Education Department is to attract more students to participate in classes. We think that students would be more willing to go to classes if there were more options for classes. Therefore we are allowing students to choose from the following three options:
I Regular Physical Education (according to time table)
14 teaching weeks 7 double physical education classes with one allowed absence. 6 chances to fulfill the requirements for signature at the end of the semester In case of an absence, a make up class should be scheduled according to the timetable. Beforehand, makeup classes are not allowed.
Every 2 weeks a student can take part in 1 double physical education class. Students must attend 3 of their own classes.
II Volunteer Based Classes
Only students that are enthusiastic about a certain sport and have a need for more intense physical exercise requiring large physical strength should pick this curriculum. There are a variety of sports offered. The techniques along with special exercises from regular physical education will be taught.
Only one of these subgroups can be chosen.
Ball Game Classes
Students will become familiar with the 4 basic ball games (Handball, Basketball, Volleyball, and Football) and based on this, the student will decide which of these subgroups they will continue with to practice next year.
Form Fixing Exercise
For 6 years this special form fixing exercise has been available. This class is designed to prevent one side of your body from becoming stronger than the other and to relieve back pain, which is very common among students. In the first six semester students study a lot and It is important for them to move their back muscles, hips, and shoulders. This class will facilitate that!
Swimming
Running, Nordic Walking (Special running with ski pole) Power Kraft (Special walking with weights)
Weight lifting, Body Building
Primarily offered for male students.
Golf
Students will become familiar with the basics of this sport. Only for beginners!
Rowing The goal is to teach the correct form and movement of rowing. Two associations have been formed
1.)FTC Evezős klub (Gubacsi híd)
