This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
For detailed information about the volunteer based classes please go to Information on changes in the Physical Education Curriculum for Students chapter.
If you cannot sign up for volunteer based classes, (in case of fullfillness) then students have to attend regular physical education classes (biweekly, and according to the timetable). If you get accepted into a volunteer based class we will send you a confirmation e-mail.
Information on changes in the Physical Education Curriculum for students in Semmelweis University 's General Dentistry, Medicine, and Pharmacy Faculties
In September 2003 physical education started since physical education has become a part of the mandatory curriculum on April 21st 2003. Each student is required to acquire four signatures in the first six semesters. An enrolled student must take part in physical education classes once every two weeks for a double period (2 X 45). A student is only allowed to be absent once per semester. All other absences must be made up. A student is only allowed to participate in one mandatory PE class per week being their normal PE class or a scheduled make up class.
A mandatory PE class will be conducted according to a syllabus which has designed to exercise different muscle groups. There will be a special emphasis on form and exercise technique. Professional dentist and pharmacists are prone to vertebral problems so this is why we have begun to give great attention to back exercises.
There is also a great deal of emphasis on game sports too. In the second half of the class students will be allowed to choose their favorite game including Handball, Basketball, Volleyball, Football, Tennis, Floor ball, Ping Pong, Badminton, Baseball, and Rugby.
Students during class will learn the basis of these sports. Basic training methods will also be taught. At the end of the 4th semester students should be able to warm up by themselves for any type of physical exercise and be able to give advice to patients about life style based on their own experiences in their Physical Education classes.
In the past five years we have experienced that it is hard for students to attend the mandatory physical education classes. The goal of the Physical Education Department is to attract more students to participate in classes. We think that students would be more willing to go to classes if there were more options for classes. Therefore we are allowing students to choose from the following three options:
I Regular Physical Education (according to time table)
14 teaching weeks 7 double physical education classes with one allowed absence. 6 chances to fulfill the requirements for signature at the end of the semester In case of an absence, a make up class should be scheduled according to the timetable. Beforehand, makeup classes are not allowed. Every 2 weeks a student can take part in 1 double physical education class. Students must attend 3 of their own classes.
II Volunteer Based Classes
Only students that are enthusiastic about a certain sport and have a need for more intense physical exercise requiring large physical strength should pick this curriculum. There are a variety of sports offered. The techniques along with special exercises from regular physical education will be taught.
Only one of these subgroups can be chosen. Ball Game Classes
Students will become familiar with the 4 basic ball games (Handball, Basketball, Volleyball, and Football) and based on this, the student will decide which of these subgroups they will continue with to practice next year.
Form Fixing Exercise
For 6 years this special form fixing exercise has been available. This class is designed to prevent one side of your body from becoming stronger than the other and to relieve back pain, which is very common among students. In the first six semester students study a lot and It is important for them to move their back muscles, hips, and shoulders. This class will facilitate that!
Swimming
Running, Nordic Walking (Special running with ski pole) Power Kraft (Special walking with weights)
Weight lifting, Body Building
Primarily offered for male students.
Golf
Students will become familiar with the basics of this sport. Only for beginners!
Rowing The goal is to teach the correct form and movement of rowing. Two associations have been formed
1.)FTC Evezős klub (Gubacsi híd)
Both these places will accept students. Signature requirements for the volunteer based classes
1.) Students must attend once a week for 60 minutes. 2.) Students need to attend 10 hours of class before signature is given. 3.) Students need to finish in the same class where they originally started. There is no switching. 4.) Make up classes: If more than one group is started per class then the make up will be within the class. If only one group is started per class than the make up will be held in Regular Physical education class (according to the time table). 5.) There are a limited number of spaces. It is not possible to take more students then the limit. Students who apply first get the spots. 6.) German and English students may participate in Hungarian classes just like the Hungarians may participate in German and English classes. Classes are conducted according to the language the timetable says. 7.) Classes will be offered late afternoon, in the evening, or on Saturdays. 8.) These changes will be implemented in the 2010-2011 school year. 9.) First year Hungarian students are only allowed to take regular Physical Education classes (according to the time table). All current students (General Dentistry, General Pharmacy, General Medicine) and all foreign language classes can freely apply for the volunteer based classes. 10.) Incomplete classes can be made up in the first six semesters 11.) If more personnel and finical support is found Volunteer Classes will be opened for the first year Hungarian students.
III. Selection of sports for Competition
Under the direction of the Physical Education Department sport classes have been held twice a week for the past five years in the following sports:
1.) Handball 2.) Basketball 3.) Volleyball 4.) Football 5.) Floorball
In this class students from SOTE along with other students from other universities in Budapest are training to compete in the Medikus Cup. Only those students that are exceptionally good in sports should apply for this position. Acceptance to this is based on condition of the student and the number of students applying.
To get signature students must be present in 50% of the classes. The exact dates will be found on the universities home page after September 3, 2010. Signup is done on the Neptun. Spaces are available for10-30 students.
Regards,
Team ISAS 2010/2011

The ISAS team and I hope that you had a successful exam period and are enjoying the beginning of the 2nd Semester. As many of you know, we had the USMLE Guest Speaker, Dr. Bazak Sharon, a Semmelweis Graduate, and now an assistant Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Minnesota. We are planning to invite more guest speakers, including a Dental Seminar, which will be given by a Canadian Dentist: Dr.Sandu. This is a great way to promote your university and have something memorable for yourself, friends, and family. Keep checking the website for more information. The new ISAS membership/ discount cards will be arriving shortly. Make sure that you register yourself onto the new ISAS website, and updates will be given about when and where you can collect your card, and about new local companies that have agreed to give you discounts when you show this card. The website will continuously be updated with more information about your teachers; educational resources to make your studying more successful; a forum where you can voice your opinions; a place for you to sell your old books, and a lot more. The ISAS leadership would like to sponsor more tutorial sessions given by professors from our school, and try to open more studying facility hours, for example, the anatomy museum on Saturdays!! We would love to find students that would like to give tutorials and help. Please write to us on the website if you are interested. The ISAS team is always looking for suggestions and volunteers, so please feel free to email us, and have another great semester.
Sincerely,
